The College Guidance program at Loyola School recognizes, above all, the distinct qualities and talents of each and every student in our school community. Our mission is to determine the college or university that will most appropriately meet the academic, social, and spiritual needs of our students while nurturing their intellectual and personal gifts. The program is, first and foremost, relationship-based. Through college guidance classes and direct accessibility to the Director of College Counseling, student-counselor familiarity is realized enabling the dissemination of vital information and, ultimately, to the Director’s personal advocacy of student applicants in the college admissions process.
The exploration of numerous other resources, including informative websites, literature, and timely campus visits is strongly promoted. Ultimately, the goal is to engender a college-bound climate in the school that equips our students with the knowledge, experience, and intellectual preparedness to select an academic institution that will inspire a meaningful, rewarding, and successful future. The Loyola School College Guidance Office achieves this mission through the following initiatives:
Counselor Accessibility—The Director of College Counseling is available for all students and families on a daily basis throughout the academic year. Through personal consultation, email, and phone contact, parents and students enjoy comprehensive and immediate access to the Director.
College Guidance Classes—Beginning in the second semester of junior year, all Loyola students attend college guidance meetings in small groups with the Director of College Counseling once per cycle. The purpose of these meetings is to begin self-assessment and preparation for the college selection and application process.
Parent Meetings—The Director of College Guidance hosts annual informational meetings for parents of students in all grades, nine through twelve.
Freshman College Meeting—Each spring a college admissions representative from a New York area college or university facilitates an in-school presentation with our freshman class to discuss long-term college planning issues and to motivate our students to make the most of the high school years.
Sophomore College Immersion Day—In the sophomore year, Loyola students spend one day on-site at two New York area college campuses with admissions office representatives. Two distinctly different universities are selected so that students may understand more fully the varying number of options available to them in higher education. It is expected that ALL sophomores will participate in this trip, which appears on the school calendar.
Junior College Tour—In June, following the termination of final exams, the junior class is invited to participate in a five-day college tour. The tour generally explores colleges in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions; the institutions visited will reflect the diversity and breadth of possible college options.
Admissions Representatives’ Visits—During school days every fall and spring, Loyola School hosts admissions directors and assistant directors from over seventy colleges and universities from across the country. During these in-school visits, Loyola students are encouraged to interact with college admissions representatives in small group meetings or in one-on-one sessions.
Web-based Support—Loyola School’s website is used extensively by our students and faculty to communicate and gather information. All pertinent college-related information is listed on the school’s website (www.loyola-nyc.org). The Internet is also used widely in school for college searches and the retrieval of vital college admissions information.
Literature and Media Resources—Loyola School possesses hundreds of videos and CD Rom disks that preview colleges throughout the United States. Additionally, current college guide books from numerous publishers and college-originated informational materials are available in our college office.
Admissions Testing Preparation—Loyola school has an on-going contract with “The Princeton Review” to offer in-house test preparation for the junior class two afternoons per week at a sharply discounted rate.
Career Exploration—To assist with career exploration, Loyola School’s Counseling Consultant administers the Strong Interest Inventory to all Loyola students in the spring of Junior year and interprets the results individually for each participant.
Typically, one hundred percent of our graduates attend four-year colleges and universities including schools of the Ivy League, selective liberal arts colleges, Jesuit colleges and universities, and the US service academies.
