On Sunday, October 28, members of Loyola School's Outdoor Club braved choppy waters and winds gusting to 35 mph to experience the thrill of late-season sailing on Long Island Sound. This year's warmer-than-usual fall weather created optimal conditions for October sailing on the Sound.
The group rented a 23 foot "Sonar" from The Waterfront Center, a non-profit sailing center in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Students in attendance learned important basic sailing terms, technical definitions of sailboat equipment, and the ways in which sailboats are prepared to work effectively and safely in high winds. All members took a turn steering at the helm and trimming the sheets.
Special thanks to the students who participated in this event—with such great cooperation, helpfulness, and willingness to have fun!
