On Thursday, October 18th the guidance department hosted Student Life Day. The theme of the day was “Awareness, Understanding, Acceptance- Religion in our Lives” and was designed to help students expand their knowledge and understanding of religions different from their own.
The day began with three speakers who addressed the school community. Mr. Mark Weitzman, Director, Task Force Against Hate for the Tolerance Center was the first speaker. He spoke about Judaism, the Holocaust, and the New York Tolerance Center. The second speaker was Pastor Matthew Recker from Heritage Baptist Church, who spoke about being a Baptist and what tolerance and understanding means to him. Hussein Rashid, from the ASMA Islamic Culture and Arts which promotes understanding of Islam among American people, was the final speaker. He addressed what is like to be a Muslim in the Post 9/11 era and clarified some common misconceptions about Islam.
After the morning speeches, students met in their mentor groups to discuss their feelings and reflections on the day. The speakers and mentor group conversations made for a day that encouraged growth in understanding and accepting those who may have beliefs and ideas different from our own.
