Over Spring Break, 35 Loyola students accompanied by chaperones Mrs. Cerussi, Mr. Donacik, Ms. Ferran, and Mr. Lyness discovered the beauty of Greece and some of its surrounding islands in the Aegean Sea. While in Athens they explored the wonders of the ancient Acropolis, site of the city’s most remarkable Greek ruins, visited the National Archaeological Museum, viewed the Corinth Canal and the Temple of Apollo. They visited the Amphitheatre of Epidaurus famed for its amazing acoustics as well as a day-long trip to Delphi where its Oracle once prophesied men’s destinies. After four days in Athens, the group drove to the port of Piraeus where their Grecian adventure continued aboard a three-day cruise on the Aquamarine to several of the Greek Islands. Stops were made in Mykonos, famous for its windmills, the medieval city of Rhodes and the village of Lindos, and Kusadasi in Turkey where they visited the ancient ruins of Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary. Once disembarking the ship, it was a return to Athens for a final day. Free time was spent at the Plaka in the old part of the city, viewing the changing of the guard ceremony, watching and participating in Greek dancing at a taverna, visiting a ceramics factory, shopping, evening walks for ice cream, swimming at one of the glorious beaches, and dancing at the disco aboard the cruise ship. A party was held our last night in Athens celebrating a successful trip as well as Chris Vendome’s 18th birthday.
