Brownbaggers

The Loyola School “Brownbaggers” was formed almost 20 years ago when a group of students, teachers, and parents wanted to reach out to hungry people living on the streets of New York City.  The idea was simple:  make brown-bag lunches at school, then hand out these lunches to those in need.  Since its origins, this program has grown and has become part of our Christian Service Program.

Here are our Brownbaggers in action on a typical Saturday at Loyola.  The students arrive at school and meet Ms. Kusk in the Commons.  New volunteers are led by our student leaders (known as BLT’s) and are taught how to prepare the lunches and pack them up in the brown bags.  The students are escorted by faculty volunteers, like Mr. Joseph and Ms. Gelfand, to areas throughout the city where hungry people gather in hopes of receiving food from volunteer groups, such as ours.  The adult volunteers and all the members of the Brownbaggers hand out those one hundred lunches to the folks we meet; then it is back to Loyola for a brief reflection on the day.

This year, we are delighted to say that our Brownbaggers Leadership Team (BLT’s) has expanded to include some brand new members:  Sean McAlinden, Cara Esposito, Daniela Di Guido, Morgan Simons, John Catsimatidis, James Molinaro, and Sam Taylor D’Ambrosio, who have helped kick off our new year of service in September and October.  Parents and alumni are also always welcome to attend Brownbaggers.  Please feel free to e-mail Ms. Kusk anytime for more information.
