CalendarThis past August, ten of Loyola’s most recent
graduates, three members of the Loyola faculty, and one Loyola parent
traveled to Belize, Central America to partake in an intensive Christian
Service experience. During the ten days in and around Belize City,
these students worked tirelessly to build a small and simple yet sturdy
home. They worked long days beneath the relentless sun, side by side
with members of the Belizean family moving into the house. Through the
cutting of wood and hammering of nails, they were not only able to build a
house, they built and strengthened relationships. They deepened their
friendships within the Loyola community, and they reach out in solidarity
with the Belizeans whom they accompanied. In addition to the long days
of rigorous labor, the trip allow for plenty of prayer and reflection each
evening, through which the students sought to “find God in all things” which
they were experiencing in Belize. By encountering the natural beauty,
hospitable people, and rich culture, as well as the plights, struggles, and
poverty of Belize, these ten young “men and women for others” were able to
recognize God’s living presence in both the gifts and challenges of a
foreign land, as well as those of their own lives, as they grew in faith and
formation during their time in Belize.

Christian Service.
